High blood pressure -

There is no one identifiable cause for high blood pressure. A combination of factors like stress, alcohol, smoking, weight and lack of physical activity seem to have to come together to produce this problem, which is further compounded by family history and age.

It is a condition that if left unattended could gravitate to something worse. Taking proactive measures in preventing heart diseases, stroke and even kidney disease by managing your blood pressure may be the best decision you can make today.

The idea of  high blood pressure prevention and management through the use of herbs and spices has slowly been gaining ground. There are reports by patients with the condition has shown improvements while maintaining a good quality of life.

Spice up your life

In a published study featured in the Journal of Medicine, it was revealed that common spices can protect from heart disease and the deterioration brought about by aging. In the said study, researchers discovered a connection between the phenol content of certain herbs and spices and their capacity to prevent glycation and formation of AGE compounds that are responsible for premature aging and heart disease.

As a way to manage your blood pressure, herbs and spices are a fantastic way to increase the medicinal value of your food. Below are some herbs and spices you may have been enjoying with no idea as to their value:

1. Garlic - Garlic contains allicin, a substance which has antibacterial, antioxidant, lipid lowering and anti-hypertension properties. In a pilot study made at Clinical Research Center of New Orleans on whether garlic could lower blood pressure, nine patients with severe hypertension were given a garlic preparation containing 1.3 % allicin. Sitting blood pressure fell with a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure only five to 14 hours after the dose. Moreover, it was proven in a 2009 study that fresh garlic has more potent cardio-protective properties than processed garlic.

2. Cinnamon - Cinnamon not only prevents heart disease, it can also prevent diabetes. The Center for Applied Health Sciences in Ohio conducted a study of 22 subjects, half of which were given a 250mg of water soluble cinnamon daily while the other half were given placebo. It was discovered that those who drank cinnamon had a 13 to 23 percent increase in antioxidants connected with lowering blood sugar levels.

3. Onions - Onions contain quercetin, an antioxidant flavonol found to prevent heart disease and stroke. In a research study published in the Journal of Nutrition, subjects with hypertension experienced a decrease in their blood pressure by 7mmHg systolic and 5 mmHg diastolic as opposed to those who were taking placebo.

4. Olives - This herb is a significant part of the Mediterranean diet, recognized to be one of the healthiest in the world. Oil made from olives has been found to reduce blood pressure. In a study conducted on the importance of olive oil, Dr. L. Aldo Ferrara, Associate Professor at the Frederico II University of Naples in Italy discovered that the daily use of 40 grams of olive oil reduced the dosage of blood pressure medication in hypertensive patients by about 50 percent. Polyphenols in extra-virgin olive oil was credited for the significant reduction of blood pressure.

5. Oregano - This herb contains the compound carvacrol which has been proven to be effective against blood pressure. In a study conducted on animal subjects, by researchers from Eskisehir Osmangazi University in Turkey, carvacrol was found to reduce heart rate, mean arterial pressure as well as the systolic and diastolic blood pressures.

6. Hawthorn - This herb has been traditionally used to treat high blood pressure. In one study conducted in Reading, UK, 79 type-2 diabetic patients were randomized to receive 1200 mg of hawthorn extract while another group received medication for high blood pressure. Results revealed that patients taking hawthorn by the end of the 16th week showed a reduction in their mean diastolic pressure.

7. Cardamom- In one study published in the Indian Journal of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 20 subjects newly diagnosed with primary hypertension were administered 3 g of cardamom powder. After the end of the 3 months, all the subjects experienced feelings of well-being without any side effects. Moreover, the study was able to demonstrate that blood pressure was effectively reduced. It also improved antioxidant status while breaking down blood clots without significantly altering blood lipids and fibrinogen levels.

Taking advantage of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of spices and herbs is an excellent way to boost your body's health. Herbs have low calorie content, increase the medicinal value of your food and allow you to use natural forms of lowering blood pressure. Mix them up with your soups, salads, fish and meat and vegetable dishes. It's a healthier and cheaper alternative to keeping bottles of prescription drugs and synthetic supplements.

Treat Your Liver Right

The liver has many functions, but the one I will concentrate on is its ability to neutralize toxins we eat. The liver is responsible for making sure that nutrients reach your cells and blood is free of toxins and pathogens. It does this by moving these contaminates out through your 5 channels of elimination - kidneys, lungs, colon, lymphatic system, and skin.

Of course, when these 5 channels become toxic, sluggish, or blocked, the liver itself becomes toxic and sluggish. This causes the liver to become inefficient, which leads to an unhealthy body.

Sluggish Liver

As the liver loses its ability to detoxify toxins, you will exhibit a variety of symptoms and various illnesses - constipation, high cholesterol, irritable bowel, asthma, skin rashes, high blood sugar, allergies. Other conditions related to a sluggish liver are:

*high blood pressure
* abdominal bloating
* pot belly, weight gain, cellulite
* elevated cholesterol
* brownish spots on your skin
* acne, pimples, eczema
* hot flashes, irritability, depression
* chronic fatigue syndrome

The liver is most affected by the foods we eat. What is especially deadly is eating food products that have "Hydrogenated Oils", which contain trans-fatty acids. The liver sees trans-fatty acids as a toxin and not as a nutrient. At least 40% of all the fat that you consume or more, if you eat junk food, contains hydrogenated oils :

Trans-fatty acids are deadlier than regular animal fat. Trans-fatty acids are associated with heart disease, breast cancer, and diabetes.

What a good liver does

The more junk food you eat the more you overload your liver. Its ability to process and create the nutrients that you need is hampered. Its ability to process and utilize fat is reduced.

If your liver is sluggish and overworked, it will store the fats you eat within its own cells, within the cells of your body and especially around your mid drift.
When your liver is working properly, some fats are eliminated through bile and out through fecal matter. If you eat plenty of fiber, this fat is absorbed by the fiber and held there until you have a bowel movement. If you do not eat enough fiber, this fat can be reabsorbed by the colon walls and routed back to the liver to be reprocessed.
So now you can see how important is it to reduce, from all sources, the amount of toxins that get into your body and to eat plenty of fiber.

Rejuvenating your liver

So what will it take to rejuvenate your liver so that it is not sluggish, not toxic, and functions like it should to help you maintain your weight?
There are three things that you need to do. These things take a lot of work. You have to be motivated to do them. Getting your liver back to health will takes some time since you need to remove the toxins from your liver slowly otherwise you will have side effects.

* eat liver friendly foods
* cleanse the liver
* strengthen the liver

Eat liver friendly foods:

* prepare a liquid green drink for your liver first thing in the morning.
* squeeze the juice of one lemon into a glass
* add one tablespoon of chlorophyll
* add one tablespoon of aloe vera drink
* add 8 oz of distilled water

This drink helps to regenerate the liver.

* The lemon helps your liver regenerate and produce bile (healthy bile is necessary for breaking down fat so that fats can be absorbed properly into the liver.)
* Chlorophyll helps to detoxify your colon so fewer toxins get into the liver.
* The lemon and aloe vera help stimulate bowel movements.
The liver needs plenty of minerals. As you know minerals are obtained from fruits and vegetables. Once a day try to drink a vegetable juice. A juice that I enjoy is:
* carrots
* celery
* apples

Your Gut Health

In Today’s Modern World,  it is difficult to find a person whose intestinal functioning is not impaired as a result of poor dietary habits and adverse environmental influences. Constipation, intestinal gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and the growing problem of fungal diseases and parasites can often be traced back to disrupted intestinal functions.

Through our past eating habits, emotional pressures and environmental stress our bodies have become reservoirs for toxic waste. Layer upon layer of mucoid plaque has been built up in our intestinal tract. Elimination of waste does not function at optimal levels, our kidneys aren’t excreting fully, our liver is not detoxifying completely, the bile is not flowing properly, the pancreas can not produce the enzymes meant for digestion, fats and cholesterol have built up, skin problems have emerged, chronic fungal problems or candida won’t go away, and our immune systems have become so compromised.

In our modern culture, we seem to have lost touch with the basic understanding of how real health is attained.

Through applying the principles of modern scientific research with the traditions of cleansing the intestine through the use of herbs and natural substances, the body can be helped exponentially. For thousands of years native peoples have known that healing comes from our connection with the Earth to help us regain vibrant health.
Cleaning your colon is one step to getting it all out. When you combine colon cleansing with other body cleansing processes, like liver cleansing and other advanced protocols, it's possible to reach even deeper levels of toxicity in the body, which can remove even more difficult to eliminate disease.

Right now there's a war raging inside your digestive tract. Billions of "good guy" beneficial bacteria (called probiotics, which literally means "for life") are defending you against an army of  pathogens. Your total health depends upon the good guys.

Discover the Yin-Yang Herbs to Make You Feel Better in our Cleansing with SuperHerbs Workshop

It's  a field of healthcare that will hopefully help us achieve radiant health. By grasping the secrets of the Chinese healthcare art on how herbs are classified, selected and used

 Did you know that in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it’s not just the nutrients in a food but also the “hot” and “cold” of certain foods that can make you feel better?  Here’s why : each food has an energetic property of yin or yang. These are thought of as complimentary pairs that are constantly shifting in relationship to one another. Easy ways to think about it: Yin is to yang as night is to day…quiet is to busy…and cold is to hot. It is believed that we absorb yin (cold) or yang (hot) energy from the foods we eat—and that medical conditions are manifestations of these yin-yang imbalances. This means: We can  correct imbalances with the appropriate yin-yang foods. Find out more about this approach to healing

 The warming and cooling properties of a food has more to do with the food’s balance and contrast among ingredients and the effect of these on the body when the food is ingested. TCM categorizes foods as cold, cooling, neutral, warming and hot. As explained above, yin is related to cold foods and yang to hot foods. STAYING IN BALANCE The concept of yin and yang was introduced by Confucius in his five classic works, the I Ching. The philosophy states that imbalances in the life force (qi) cause illness and unhappiness. Hence, by adjusting your diet you can regain equilibrium. Using yin-yang foods to gain equilibrium is not an exact science. There is no one percentage or quantity of yin-yang foods to eat.

 Focus mainly on eating foods that support his yin/yang needs. Common health conditions and their imbalances include… Conditions affected by too much heat (yang) in the body: High blood pressure, skin rash, hot flashes. Consume: Cool or cold foods that promote yin energy. Conditions arising from too much cold (yin) in the body: Fatigue, depression, muscle ache, stuffy nose, cough with clear white phlegm, fluid retention. Consume: Warm or hot foods that promote yang energy. Conditions that alternatively arise from too much cold or heat in the body: Constipation, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, headache. Consume: Some conditions are helped by either hot or cold foods. Take constipation, for example. If you have dry, hard stools, then you have yin-deficient constipation and need more moisture/yin foods. If you have yang-deficient constipation with wetter stools, then you may need more yang foods.

 The yin-yang value of some foods… You can balance the yin-yang property of your food by adding “cold” spices and foods to warm or hot foods and vice versa. Yang foods (hot): Cayenne pepper, dried ginger, soybean oil, cinnamon, black pepper, chili powder, horseradish, lamb, trout and whole green or red peppers. Yang foods (warming): Cherries, coconut, lemons, raspberries, cauliflower, mustard greens, onion, coffee, garlic, fresh ginger, chestnuts, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, chicken, shrimp, mussels, lobster, turkey, yogurt, butter. Yin foods (cooling): Apples, bananas, pears, strawberries, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, spinach, Swiss chard, celery, soybeans, buckwheat, sesame oil. Yin foods (cold): Papaya, watermelon, grapefruit, tomatoes, asparagus, cucumbers, summer squash, romaine lettuce, seaweed, barley, tofu. Neutral foods: Neutral foods are believed to be nourishing to everyone—and don’t increase the yin or yang balance in the body. Neutral foods include apricots, figs, pineapple, beets, cabbage, carrots, olives, pumpkin, string beans, yams, eggs, oats, almonds, peas, peanuts, rice, beef, oysters, pork, whitefish, salmon, sardines, herring and saffron. If you are interested in learning more about how yin-yang foods can help you, join our workshop. Hope to see you there !

Today's Daily Burst

Here' a drink that would go well with our Kefir Cake. You can make your own twist to this thirst-quenching, electrolyte-boosting “energy” drink.  It is similar to commercially made sports drinks thanks to the potassium and magnesium in molasses.
